The Alignment of University Faculty Competencies with Teaching General Education Curricula

Abstract

This study examines the extent to which university professors’ educational competencies align with the requirements of teaching the general education curriculum, through a case study conducted in a general education institution. The research problem focuses on determining the ability of university professors to adapt to general education environments and teach its curricula effectively. The study employed a descriptive analytical approach to analyze the teaching experience in a setting different from higher education, supported by field data collected through a questionnaire distributed to a sample of faculty members. The findings revealed a clear gap between university professors’ competencies and the requirements of general education, particularly in classroom management skills and the application of active learning strategies. The study recommends developing specialized pedagogical qualification programs for professors who wish to transition to general education and encouraging them to engage in field experiences that enhance their educational competencies. It also emphasizes the importance of collaboration between the Ministries of Education and Higher Education to design joint programs that support the professional development of university professors.
